“ScandiMuji”
Tasked to design her dream home, Huiling came up with a “ScandiMuji” concept to apply to a resale 4-room HDB flat with a slightly curved floor plan. No prizes for guessing what ScandiMuji actually means.

Huiling envisioned her dream home to be color-minimalistic, and functional. The interiors were updated to today’s vibe-palette, but somehow, the outcome turned out to be a timeless one. Huiling explored a simple mix of beautiful wood grains, and a variety of wood tones. This allowed her to inject warmth and weave a certain peacefulness into the space. Curved and arched carpentry appears to be a consistent feature to soften corners. The displays of home decor Huiling is looking to collect over the years will create a visual that provides an eclectic personal touch to her home.
Huiling’s suggestion for a color palette is minimal, therefore allowing her to translate this into a material board that easily promotes a textural experience.
Material Palette
With wood consuming most the interior’s surface, a lighter shade of wood such as beech and oak were chosen for the floors to complement the loose furniture, which were in shades of nude and white tones.
Huiling also used sliding glass doors to segregate spaces. See-through glass maximises natural lighting, allowing the sun-bathed wood textures to have further visual depth.
The Transformation
“One of the key struggles of this layout is the enclosed kitchen area and the slanted walls within the house.
However, such a layout does provide story-telling potential. One should embrace the beauty of the existing bones.”
The original bedroom 3 was removed and converted into a larger space for dining and social activities (Huiling envisions inviting friends over often!).
A sliding glass door was used to segregate the living room and dining area to preserve an illusion of a vast space, while a porous bookshelf between the living room and study room created a softer segregation. The remaining bedrooms were retained on the further end of the home for privacy, away from social areas.
For Hui Ling, cabinet seats are an absolute essential at the main entrance! An entryway storage integrated with open shelves and a seating nook were the perfect combination to assemble herself before she leaves home for work everyday.
For a more homely vibe, a large rug was used to softly define the living space, while statement rattan lamp shades added to the breeziness of the home.
“In places we don’t see wood, we find a lot of white.
This will help reflect sunlight and keep the whole atmosphere light and breezy.”
In the study room, the choice of a white, groove-line feature wall weaves in a contemporary feel, and also serves as an effective juxtaposition against the wooden open bookshelf unit. The strategic use of a bookshelf as a partition can also help to maximise space and storage while maintaining a tidy and uncluttered space.
With an interest in Fengshui, Huiling chose to place for a mirror to sit in her dining room - an abundance of wealth, growth and prosperity to flow! The curved frames of the sliding doors help to complement the round mirror as well as soften up the harshness of the hard surfaces.
