Ashley, a dedicated speech therapist, and Juan, a passionate marketer and photographer, reside in a charming four-room resale flat located in the Havelock-River Valley area. Covering 980 square feet, their home is a haven of relaxation, designed to offer both personal comfort and a welcoming space for friends and family. The couple sought a centrally located flat, close to Ashley’s parents and easily accessible via public transport, a key factor since they don’t drive.
Their vision was to craft a home that is both visually appealing and highly functional, with a focus on effortless maintenance and a clean, uncluttered aesthetic.
The Living Room
Upon entering, guests are greeted by a spacious and clutter-free living and dining area. The couple decided against a traditional coffee table to keep the walkways clear, enhancing the sense of openness. The dining space doubles as a social hub, allowing them to enjoy meals while watching TV and seamlessly transitioning to the couch for extended conversations.
The Kitchen
Juan’s favorite space, the kitchen, features reed glass panels that let natural light diffuse through the home, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. Hidden at the far end of the kitchen is a discreet laundry area. The couple opted for green tones in the kitchen laminate, tying the design to the rest of the home.
A compact breakfast counter is perfect for quick bites during busy mornings, blending convenience with style.
The Bedroom
The master bedroom was designed as a sanctuary of rest, featuring only a built-in wardrobe to minimize distractions. The couple extended the master bathroom by 60cm to better separate wet and dry areas, adding a touch of luxury and functionality. Retaining the original arches in the walkways serves as a nod to the flat’s 30-year history, adding character and a sense of nostalgia.
Study Nook
Designed with practicality in mind, the study room reflects Juan’s dynamic needs as a photographer. Avoiding built-in furniture, the space allows flexibility for his evolving requirements. Positioned to maintain a connection to the living area, Juan can work privately while staying engaged with household activities. The feature wall in this room incorporates green accents, harmonizing with the home’s overall palette.
