DARK & DARING

Type: 4 Room BTO | Location: Alkaff Crescent, Singapore | Home to: 2 Adults

Designer: Farrah | Project Manager: Kenrick

Designed for a couple with a penchant for dusky hues, the clients of this 4 room BTO flat took a bold step to embrace the dark side despite the physical constraints of the home. By exploring strategies that accentuate spaciousness, Farrah crafted a home that artfully balances the homeowner’s aesthetic preferences in relation to the space.

Mood Images

Featuring dynamic contrasts with monochromatic black, greys and whites, the space exudes a bold and unwavering charisma layered with sophistication. The outcome — a contemporary lodging that boasts clean silhouettes.

Material Palette

Bounded by a palette of neutrals, Farrah set a masculine tone for the space with the use of black as the dominant colour. Brown accents in the form of dark woods and cognac leather were also incorporated into the foundational colour scheme, standing out against the moody accompaniment with a touch of warmth. Finished with satin walls, glossy tiles and tinted mirrors, this abode is effortlessly stylish — much like the clients that we know.

Layout Plan

The final layout retains much of its original functions following our client’s request. With the aesthetic direction in mind, Farrah wanted to optically enlarge the home as a counteraction to the darker themes proposed. While the footprints of the three bedrooms remain unchanged, one room has been converted into a home office. Set apart with glass sliding doors, this space is visually connected to the larger common areas while enabling daylight to penetrate into the depths of the home.

Upon entering, guests are first greeted by the living room washed in diffused daylight. This initial frontage is kept light and airy for a welcoming display. The living space, populated by loose furnishing pieces, is kept flexible for future reconfigurations.

An instant head-turner — the dining area is dramatically cladded in black with a statement live edge dining table. The dark paint was incorporated in a strategic manner to achieve a tasteful balance with the opposing lighter shades within the vicinity. Through meticulous scrutiny, the cabinetry laminates were selected to echo the same shade of the walls thus accentuating the visual connection between the dry pantry and dining. Tinted mirrors were also introduced with the carpentry in a sleek and subtle way to brighten and double up the space.

Encased with clear glass sliding panels, the wet kitchen houses an L-shaped quartz counter sitting atop of matte black cabinets. As a contrast, glossy white marble tiles were also proposed at the backsplash with an added element of sophistication. These reflective surfaces allow ambient light to bounce around the surroundings, augmenting the brightness of the space and ensuring that the naturally dim corners of the house are still adequately lit.

The smaller spaces were also consistent with the monochromatic theme of the home.

Keeping things minimal, both bathrooms were overlaid with tiles in shades of grey and black. Farrah also suggested wood laminated cabinets for some added storage and a touch of warmth. Equipped with polished chrome fixtures, the bathrooms are finished with simple yet refined execution.

The master bedroom radiates intimacy with its black walls and a cosy ambient glow, enabling the homeowners to wind down and find comfort at home.
