For Sherwin and Dawn, home is more than just a residence, it is a sanctuary filled with love, warmth, and moments shared as a family. Parents to three young daughters and a dog, the couple sought to create a space that is both practical and inviting.
Living in a four-bedroom condominium in Shunfu, they aimed for a design that balanced aesthetics with safety, especially for their active, young children. Their vision centered on minimizing sharp edges and embracing the softer appeal of curves throughout the home.
The Living Room
Upon entering the home, the foyer welcomes guests with a multifunctional shoe cabinet and open shelving to display cherished items. Practicality meets style with hexagon tiles replacing the original marble flooring, chosen for their textured surface that reduces slips, an essential consideration for a household with children. These tiles seamlessly complement the grey, white, and green tones of the kitchen backsplash.
Rather than centering the living room around a television, Sherwin and Dawn created a play area for their children. A deep TV console doubles as storage for toys, which are rotated to keep the play experience fresh and engaging. This functional design encourages creativity and interaction while parents prepare meals nearby in the open kitchen.
The Kitchen Area
The kitchen reflects the family’s love for an open-concept design. By hacking down walls, the space now features a long island that serves as a hub for breakfasts and casual family moments. The countertops offer more than just functionality, they are a gathering spot for spreading bread and preparing food while interacting with the children.
Curved ceiling accents and a carefully carved coffee niche add a unique charm to the area, even though the latter required sacrificing some storage space. The grey hexagon tiles were a deliberate choice for their anti-slip quality, ensuring safety in a home filled with young children.
The Bedroom
The master bedroom is a tranquil retreat for Sherwin and Dawn. A deep blue feature wall creates a distinct character, contrasting with the softer tones used throughout the home. Minimal renovations were required, with beams added to the ceiling to enhance the cozy atmosphere. Equipped with a projector and balcony, the bedroom becomes a private haven for quiet nights, reading, or moments of reflection. The balcony also offers a space where the couple can escape for a brief respite, ensuring uninterrupted relaxation.
Collaborating with BuildBuilt’s designer and project manager was an enjoyable and smooth experience for the couple. The team understood their vision and translated their priorities into a practical yet aesthetically pleasing design.
