BRIGHT & LIVELY

Home is a safe space where our clients can relax with their young son, and also a place to gather their loved ones and have meaningful conversations. With this being their first home, the couple challenged themselves to rethink the idea of a living room without a TV screen. Without the restriction of a TV wall, they were able to carve out a play area for their son, and also spend their evenings doing more purposeful activities together. Bringing Light to the Heart of the Home

When our clients approached us about renovating their 4 room resale flat, their main objective was to have a space where they could truly relax in and family connections could flourish. They were determined to break down the original kitchen walls to allow natural light to permeate throughout their home. This decision represented more than just an aesthetic preference; it embodied their desire for an open plan that would facilitate their everyday routines.

While embracing this open concept, they also recognised practical needs. They wanted a separate kitchen area for heavy cooking to contain cooking aromas. The solution is an elegant and functional mild steel framed glass door that maintained the feeling of visual connectivity while creating a practical division when needed.

A Calming Palette for Recharging

For the color palette, our clients opted for calming neutrals – a choice that reflected their desire for a timeless retreat after long, busy days. In our initial consultation, they expressed a clear intention to create a home that would remain elegant and relevant, even as trends shifted. When they first viewed the unit, they knew it was THE home for them with the floor to ceiling windows and natural daylight flooding the space. Maximizing natural light was a top priority, as we worked to bring that wonderful experience into the dim corners of the old HDB layout.

With these goals in mind, we guided them toward design elements that would age gracefully alongside their family. This thoughtful, long-term approach is a cornerstone of our residential portfolio, crafting spaces that stay beautiful and functional for years to come.

A Dining Area Designed for Gathering and Growth

The dining area stands as the heart of this home, designed with both beauty and purpose. The homeowners wanted a seamless space where guests would feel comfortable helping themselves to cups and cutlery, becoming active participants in gatherings rather than just passive visitors.

As their family has evolved, so has the space. With their son growing older, they’ve also added a kid-sized extension to their dining table so that he could also experience the beautiful space in his own way.

Lighting played a crucial role in establishing the right atmosphere. While our team ensured adequate lighting throughout the space with a combination of ceiling and accent lights, the homeowners discovered that LED strip lights along the countertops created the cozy mood they most appreciate. These subtle touches, along with natural lighting, have become their preferred illumination most of the time.

Challenging Design Conventions

After visiting friends with TV-free homes, our clients questioned whether they needed a screen at all. They explored this unconventional idea together, considering how it might reshape their living patterns.

Their decision to forgo a TV has transformed their home life in unexpected ways. Without a TV and console, they were able to place the sofa up against the wall to create a flexible play area where their young son can move more freely in a larger space. Guests could also gather at the dining table while their children play within the living space. With their screen time effectively reduced, the family’s evenings would also be spent doing more meaningful activities that they would usually put off doing, such as bible reading time, couple time and also quick gym sessions.

Experience Working with BuildBuilt

Every renovation project tells a unique story, and for this family, the journey was as important as the final result. When they first approached us, we understood the delicate balance of transforming a space while respecting the rhythm of family life.

Our approach begins with listening. Understanding that these homeowners were first-time renovation clients and new parents meant we needed to be especially attentive. We prioritized clear communication, providing regular updates and transparent timelines that would help them feel informed and supported throughout the process.

Careful planning became our cornerstone. We meticulously documented each stage of the project, ensuring the family could see the progression and feel confident in our approach. Our team focused on creating a collaborative environment, adapting our plans to align with their vision of a functional, meaningful living space.
