A (brush) stroke of courage

Ain’t saying I’m a paint saint.

We’re not saints when it comes to paint. We are going to give you some general rules here. But we are definitely going to break them. Let’s take courage, and venture into some exciting interiors with paint!

Right now, we’ll show you where to paint within a space. Keep your eyes peeled for our next few articles where we tell you how to pick colors.

Paints are an extremely affordable way to give your space a facelift. When meaningfully applied, paint can change how the space presents itself, and in turn, how you will feel when you interact with the space.

Paint and colors convey secret messages. It subtly directs the inhabitants’ movement through changing our relationship with space.

Consider these painting tips, and how they move you.

VOLUMETRIC APPROACH

Paint all faces of a room and it’ll make small spaces appear larger, or intimate spaces more… Intimate? This also depends on the choice of color. Note the logical flow and sequencing of rooms to make this work well.

PLANAR APPROACH

Explore different planes within spaces to optimize height (painting the entrance facing walls only) or accent the length of rooms (painting alongside a single length of the space).

SPOTLIGHTING APPROACH

Consider painting interior elements that you want to emphasize! Such as entrances/exits to greet inhabitants as they transit from one space to another.

PROPORTION APPROACH

Paint to change perspectives, scale and proportions of a space! One can alter a space’s volume, optically by attempting this paint strategy

Proportion approach 1: Playing within the rules of 1/3’s, separating vertical masses with color.

Proportion approach 2: Capping the ceiling with a splash of color to draw the eyes upward.

I guess you’re all set to open that can of paint?
